Holy Trinity Church Holds Annual Russian Festival

Holy Trinity Church in Baltimore, MD conducted their 42nd Annual Russian Festival October 16-18, 2015. Approximately 2,000 people attended the event over the three days.

This perennial cultural celebration featured delicious home-made Russian food, hard-to-find Russian souvenirs, religious items, fine collectibles and live entertainment.

Popular menu items included traditional borsch, kolbasa, golupsee, beef stroganoff, blinchiki, varenyky, shashlik, piroshky, pelmeni and much more.  Many visitors also enjoyed the exquisitely decorated tea room, where they sipped Russian tea in a glass, served from a gleaming antique samovar, and nibbled on tasty home-made pastries.

The Festival is famous for its homemade artisan breads baked in beautiful old time shapes – golden brown poppy seed rolls, nut rolls, tea rings, and rich babkas laden with chocolate and cherries.

There was also a large and diverse selection of collectibles, imported from Russia for sale – elegant cobalt net porcelain and bone china, imported from the Russian Imperial Factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, Christmas ornaments, upscale nesting dolls, lacquer boxes, carved wooden toys and large, carved and beautifully painted Father Frosts.

Live entertainment included performances from: the full Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra on Saturday evening; the Lyman Ukrainian Dance Ensemble on both Saturday and Sunday; the Samovar Ensemble, the Beltway Balalaikas, and the violinist Rafael Javadov. This year, the parish’s very own Holy Trinity Russian Dance Ensemble gave two performances, demonstrating 15 different dances. Created in 2014, the dance ensemble, made up of children between the ages of 5-13 showed great progress and talent in just one year.

Also, during the three days, visitors toured the church where clergy and parishioners offered personalized tours of the temple and answered questions about the Orthodox faith.
