On Sunday, May 14, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, His Beatitude Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of all America and Canada led the Divine Liturgy in St. Nicholas Cathedral in Washington DC. His Beatitude was co-served by the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokalamsk; the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Bishop John of Naro-Fominsk and Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa, Vicar of the Diocese of the West (OCA).

The hierarchs were joined by the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church taking part in the World Summit in Defense of Persecuted Christians: Vice-Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Archpriest Nikolai Danilevich; Vice-rector for Academic affairs of the  Sts Cyril and Methodius’ Church Post-Graduate and Doctoral School in Moscow, Hieromonk Ioann (Kopeikin); cleric of St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York, Archpriest Yaroslav Lutoshkin and clerics of St. Nicholas Cathedral. Also praying in the church was former representative of the Orthodox Church in America to the Moscow Patriarchate, Protopresbyter Daniel Hubiak.

After the reading of the Gospel, Metropolitan Hilarion delivered a sermon.

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Tikhon warmly greeted Metropolitan Hilarion as a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Church in which the Orthodox Church in America received her spiritual traditions.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church in America also remarked on the importance of the World Summit that included delegations from the Russian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church in America, underlining the importance of bringing the persecution of Christians to the world stage.

Metropolitan Hilarion in turn thanked His Beatitude for the invitation to visit and serve in St. Nicholas Cathedral. He also reminded that 2017 marks 100 years of the election of Patriarch Tikhon who is also affectionately referred to as the Apostle to America and that this date is momentous for the Russian Church and the Church in America.

Metropolitan Hilarion also warmly greeted Protopresbyter Daniel and Matushka Evdokia Hubiak and recalled the memories of joint services with Fr. Daniel in the Church of St. Catherine in Moscow.

Commemorative gifts were then exchanged between Metropolitans Tikhon and Hilarion.
