Central States Deanery hold Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers

On Sunday, March 8, St. Innocent of Irkutsk Church in Redford, MI hosted the parishes of the Central States Deanery for Vespers on the occasion of the Triumph of Orthodoxy.

Numerous parishioners travelled from many miles to join other Orthodox Christians in prayer during this Great and Holy Lent.

Serving for Vespers were the following clergy:

  • Archpriest Roman Star, Dean of the Central States
  • Archpriest Timothy Barna, Rector of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Redford, MI
  • Archpriest Lawrence Bacik, Rector of St. Elias Church in Battle Creek, MI
  • Archpriest Paul Waters, Attached at St. Andrew Church in East Lansing, MI
  • Priest Christopher Rozdilski, Rector of St. Andrew Church in East Lansing, MI
  • Priest Joshua Genig, parish rector
  • Priest Basil Gross, cleric of St. Andrew Church in East Lansing, MI
  • Priest James Anthony, Rector of St. John Chrysostom Church Grand Rapids
  • Hierodeacon Seraphim (Balagtas; parish cleric) and
  • Deacon Michael Cook, cleric of St. John Chrysostom Church.

The service was accompanied by the outstanding parish choir of St. Innocent, directed by Elizabeth Star-Hatfield.

In addition to a procession with icons, a homily was offered by Fr. Joshua on the significance of the occasion.

Following Vespers, the faithful were invited to venerate a relic of the Veil of the Mother of God, along with the parish’s numerous other holy relics, and then went to Trapeza to enjoy a wonderful Lenten meal prepared by the Sisterhood of St. Elizabeth the New Martyr, newly established at St. Innocent.

Given the joy and success of this service, the Deanery plans to hold a Moleben and festive meal during the summer months for fellowship and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Patriarchal Parishes.
