Victory Day Celebrations in the Patriarchal Parishes
image

Victory Day marks Germany’s surrender to the allied forces in 1945. It became the end of the Great Patriotic War for the USSR, which lost about 25 million citizens in the four years of fighting. In the United States it is also commonly referred to as "VE-Day" or Victory in Europe Day. In Russia particular, it is a National Holiday marked by special dedicatory parades and performances.  His Holiness Patriarch Kirill reiterated the need to thank God for delivering this victory and to pray for the souls of those who lost their lives fighting for freedom.

On Friday May 9th, His Eminence Justinian Archbishop of Naro-Fominsk and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA served the Divine Liturgy in St. Nicholas Cathedral in NYC, commemorating the Victory in Europe in WWII. In the evening, His Eminence served a Moleben for God's Deliverance of Victory as well as a Panikhida to those who perished fighting for their country. Afterwards, the Youth Department of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA put on display a commemorative concert to commemorate the special date.

On May 11th, the Sunday School of St. Andrew Cathedral in Philadelphia PA preformed their annual celebratory concert, celebrating Victory Day. The Rector of the Parish, Archpriest Mark Shin stated "Since Victory Day is not a national holiday in the United States, we celebrate on the nearest Sunday - May 11 this year.  Our Parishioners come from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and the Central Asian Republics.  We are bound together by our Orthodox Faith and the genuine love we have for each other.  "День Победы" (Victory Day) embraces us all as we remember the extraordinary sacrifices made by our people in the common struggle to defeat fascism.  The active participation of our Sunday School ensures that the future generations will never forget."
