On Saturday, December 6, His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of All North America of the Antiochian Orthodox Church was enthroned in St. Nicholas Cathedral in Brooklyn, NY.
On July 3, 2014, Metropolitan (then Archbishop) Joseph was elected to become the Archbishop of New York and Metropolitan of all North America by the Holy Synod of Antioch after the repose of Metropolitan Phillip (Saliba).
The enthronement began with a Service of Thanksgiving presided over by His Holiness John X, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East who arrived in the United States for this occasion.
His Holiness was co-served by the entire Holy Synod of the Antiochian Orthodox Church along with heads and representatives of various Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States. Over one thousand people tightly packed the cathedral with many resorting to stay in the parish hall to watch the services on live television.
Representing His Grace Bishop John, Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Vicar of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill was the Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Archpriest George Konyev.
At the conclusion of the Thanksgiving Service, His Holiness addressed Metropolitan Joseph and the entire North American flock with a sermon. Afterwards he presented Metropolitan Joseph with the primatial staff and panagia set. Those in attendance joined His Holiness in proclaiming "AXIOS" to the new head of the Antiochian Archdiocese in North America. Metropolitan Joseph then addressed his flock expressing his love and hopes for the future.
A large banquet was held in a nearby hotel honoring the visit of His Holiness and Metropolitan Joseph's enthronement. During the banquet, Archpriest George Konyev read aloud an encyclical from Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations. Fr. George then presented Metropolitan Joseph with a copy of the "Iveron" Icon of the Holy Theotokos as a gift from His Grace Bishop John.
