Bishop Matthew visits Historic Sites in Los Angeles

On April 30, 2026, upon his arrival in the United States, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh—Interim Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA and Canada—visited the Mission of the Holy Archangel Gabriel and the Port of the Holy Apostle Peter in Los Angeles.

According to new findings by ecclesiastical researchers of the Diocese of the Alaska (Orthodox Church in America), it was at this very site that the Orthodox Aleut Peter was captured by the Spanish inhabitants of the Mission of Saint Gabriel and, refusing to renounce his Orthodox faith, was martyred. The martyrdom of Peter the Aleut was recounted by Saint Herman of Alaska; however, prior to these findings, the Mission Dolores in San Francisco had been identified as the site of his martyrdom.

Bishop Matthew offered prayers to the Martyr Peter and to all the saints who have shone forth in the land of America, and also commemorated all Orthodox Christians...
